Over 40 families face ‘social boycott’ in Rajasthan village for not serving ‘ghee malpua’ at funeral feast

Ghee-laden malpuas were not served at a funeral feast; 43 families had to face the consequences as more than a dozen community elders were reportedly displeased.

राजस्थान: मृत्युभोज में नहीं परोसे घी के मालपुए, नाराज़ पंच, पंचायत ने 43 परिवारों का हुक्का-पानी किया बंद

Forty-three families were allegedly socially boycotted in a village in Rajasthan’s Sirohi district after failing to serve traditional ghee-laden malpuas at a post-funeral feast. The incident occurred in Mandwariya village, under the Barlut police station area, where a financially disadvantaged family served a simple meal following the death of a family member earlier this month.

Social Boycott Decree Issued

Ramesh Kumar, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) at Barlut police station, stated that a complaint has been received and the matter is under investigation. Prima facie, the case appears linked to an old dispute. An FIR will be registered once the investigation is complete. According to the complaint, due to financial constraints, the family could not prepare ghee-based malpuas as per tradition and arranged for a simple meal instead. This reportedly angered more than a dozen community elders (panchs). On June 18, a decree was issued imposing a social boycott on the bereaved family as well as 42 other families who supported them.

We Are Being Denied Rations

The deceased, Sadar Ram, passed away on June 5, and the post-funeral feast was held on June 17. The affected families allege that following the social boycott, they are being deprived of essential amenities. Village shopkeepers are refusing to sell them rations, they are barred from drawing water from the village well, and farm owners have stopped hiring them for work. Tejaram, a member of one of the affected families, said the situation has become dire. “We are not being given rations, and we aren’t even allowed to fetch water from the well.” The social boycott has also impacted family and social relationships.

Fine of ₹11,000 to be Imposed

Gopal, another affected individual, said, “A relative’s wedding was scheduled for June 20, but I could not attend due to the fear of a fine being imposed by the panchs.” The alleged decree issued by the panchayat warns that anyone violating the boycott will face a fine of ₹11,000 and will also be required to host a feast for the entire community. No concrete action taken so far

The affected families lodged a complaint at the Barlut police station on June 20, but they allege that no concrete action has been taken to date. Yesterday, members of all 43 families also met the District Magistrate of Sirohi to demand justice. Attempts were made to contact District Magistrate Rohitashwa Singh regarding this matter, but his comments could not be obtained.
