Large cracks have appeared in a section of the Ganga Expressway in Unnao. Questions have been raised regarding construction quality following incidents of road subsidence and erosion after the rains.

Large cracks have once again appeared in a patched section of the Ganga Expressway in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh. The emergence of cracks in the repaired area has raised questions regarding the expressway’s structural integrity and construction quality. This incident comes at a time when issues regarding soil subsidence and erosion had already surfaced in several sections of the expressway following continuous rainfall. Although the relevant agencies had previously carried out repairs and patching work, cracks are now visible in those very same repaired sections.
Expressway previously damaged after rains
The latest incident is reported from the vicinity of Unnao, where large cracks are visible on the repaired section. Concerns had already been raised regarding the condition of the ground and the road surface in various parts of the expressway following persistent rains. The reappearance of cracks in the patched area has further intensified doubts about the road’s durability.
Earlier, a sinkhole approximately 10 meters deep had formed on the Ganga Expressway following heavy rainfall. Reports indicated that a section of the road and the adjacent embankment near kilometer 421 on the Meerut-Prayagraj carriageway had been damaged by the flow of rainwater. Subsequently, a team from the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) visited the site and initiated repair work.
Approach road to Sonic Toll Plaza had also subsided
Prior to this, in July, an approach road spanning approximately seven meters—connecting the Sonic Toll Plaza in Unnao to the Ganga Expressway—was also damaged following heavy rains. Soil erosion occurred in the embankment, causing a section of the road to subside. These incidents, occurring after the rainfall, have heightened concerns regarding the expressway’s construction and structural stability.
Expressway built at a cost exceeding ₹36,000 crore
The 594-kilometer-long Ganga Expressway, which connects Meerut to Prayagraj, was constructed at a cost of approximately ₹36,230 crore. This six-lane, access-controlled expressway passes through 12 districts of Uttar Pradesh and is considered a vital infrastructure project for the state. It was inaugurated on April 29, 2026.
Shortly after the inauguration, reports of damage and the need for repairs in various sections of the expressway began to emerge. Now, the appearance of cracks in areas that had undergone patchwork is raising questions about the project’s durability. Concerns have mounted regarding the drainage system, embankments, and construction quality, particularly in areas prone to heavy rainfall.
