18 killed, eight injured in lightning strikes in MP, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, India

A spell of pre-monsoon rain continues across several parts of the country—including Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Haryana—yet intense heat is also causing distress to the public. Temperatures exceeding 42°C have been recorded in many areas of UP, Rajasthan, and Haryana. Along with the pre-monsoon showers, storms have also wreaked havoc in several locations.

18 Deaths Across These States

In the Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh, four people died and eight sustained burns after being struck by lightning on Friday. Additionally, two women lost their lives in Dewas when a house balcony collapsed during a storm accompanied by rain. Meanwhile, lightning strikes claimed ten lives in Jharkhand, and reports indicate two fatalities in Chhattisgarh.

Monsoon Reaches 22 States

According to the Meteorological Department, the monsoon has reached 22 states so far, and it is projected to arrive in the remaining states by July 5. In Uttar Pradesh, the monsoon is delayed by approximately eight days and is currently stalled near the Bihar border; however, it is expected to enter UP within the next one or two days.

Temperatures Exceed 40°C in Several States

Amidst this, the impact of heat persists in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, and Gujarat. On Wednesday, temperatures crossed the 40°C mark in several cities, with Rohtak in Haryana recording the highest at 43.4°C. The mercury hovered between 41°C and 43°C in cities such as Lakhimpur Kheri, Banda, Agra, Sri Ganganagar, Gwalior, and Ahmedabad. Weather Forecast for the Next 2 Days

June 28: Heavy rainfall is likely in Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal, and Sikkim. An ‘Orange Alert’ has been issued for Sikkim, Goa, Telangana, and the coastal regions of Karnataka. Heavy rain is also expected in Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Odisha. Meanwhile, heatwave conditions will persist in parts of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra.

June 29: Heavy rainfall is likely in Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Odisha, Kerala, Goa, Tamil Nadu, and the northeastern states. Strong winds (50–60 km/h) may blow across Bihar. Rain accompanied by strong winds is also forecast for Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, East Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu. Heat and heatwave conditions may persist in some areas of East Uttar Pradesh.
