Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency issued a bulletin on Monday morning, releasing a preliminary tsunami warning for the coastal areas of northeastern Indonesia following a powerful earthquake in the southern Philippines. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the southern Philippines on Monday morning. The institute reported that the quake occurred at 7:37 a.m. local time at a depth of 33 kilometers. Its epicenter was located at sea, 32 kilometers southwest of the coast of Maasim town in Sarangani province on Mindanao Island.

The institute issued a tsunami warning for nine coastal provinces, advising residents to immediately move to higher ground or away from the coast. It is estimated that the first tsunami waves could arrive on Monday morning, with effects potentially lasting for several hours. Local media reported damage to some buildings and power outages in several areas. Tremors were also felt in neighboring provinces. While there are currently no initial reports of major damage or casualties in either Indonesia or the Philippines, officials noted that strong shaking was felt in areas near the epicenter.

The earthquake struck at sea near Mindanao, the Philippines’ second-largest island, which is considered one of the most seismically active regions in the world. The Philippines lies along the “Ring of Fire,” a seismic belt where tectonic plate boundaries meet, frequently resulting in earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Additionally, Japan’s meteorological agency has issued a tsunami warning. This warning covers coastal areas stretching from Ibaraki Prefecture on Japan’s eastern Pacific coast down to Okinawa Island in the south, following the major earthquake in the Philippines.
