WPI inflation rises to 9.92% in August on rising prices of food, fuel, manufactured items, India

According to data released by the government on Monday, the country’s Wholesale Price Index (WPI)-based inflation stood at 9.92 percent for August 2026, up from 9.78 percent in July.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry stated that the WPI for all commodities was 110.8 in August 2026, compared to 110.0 in July. The data indicates that price increases in primary articles, fuel and power, and manufactured products impacted overall inflation.

Reasons for the rise in WPI

Inflation in the fuel and power category rose to 22.93 percent in August, up from 20.05 percent in July. The impact of the sharp rise in international crude oil prices in recent weeks was clearly visible in this category.

Meanwhile, inflation for primary articles stood at 7.76 percent in August, down from 8.52 percent in July. On the other hand, inflation for manufactured products rose marginally to 8.37 percent, compared to 8.29 percent in the previous month.

In August, the index for primary articles stood at 118.1, fuel and power at 108.3, and manufactured products at 108.8. The corresponding figures for July were 117.2, 105.4, and 108.4, respectively.

WPI food index-based inflation rose to 7.05 percent in August, up from 6.65 percent in July, indicating continued pressure on food item prices.

What the Ministry stated

According to the Ministry, the key factors driving wholesale inflation in August included mineral oils (including petroleum products), food articles, manufacture of food products, basic metals, non-food articles, and the manufacture of chemicals and chemical products. The government has also revised the final figures for June 2026. The WPI index for June has been raised from the provisional estimate of 110.2 to 110.3.

Concurrently, the final figure for wholesale inflation for June 2026 has been revised from 9.87 percent to 9.97 percent.

According to the data, the Input Producer Price Index (Input PPI) for the manufacturing sector stood at 104.2 in August 2026. Meanwhile, the Input PPI for June has been revised from the provisional estimate of 107.1 to 105.9.
