Two Philippine Air Force aircraft collided during a training exercise on Friday, resulting in the deaths of all four pilots on board.
The accident occurred at 3:51 PM near Fernando Air Base in Lipa City, south of Manila. Both SF-260 aircraft were flying at a low altitude. Debris from one of the planes fell near the military barracks.
The Philippine Air Force has grounded its fleet of SF-260 aircraft; they will remain grounded until the investigation is complete. This marks the fifth major mid-air collision involving aircraft globally this year.
Philippines had purchased 18 such aircraft
The SF-260 is an Italian-made training aircraft. The Philippines acquired 18 of these planes from an Italian company between 2010 and 2011. They are used to provide flight training to Air Force pilots.
The Philippine military has long been attempting to modernize its equipment, though securing the necessary budget has proven challenging. The country aims to enhance the capabilities of its Air Force, as well as its Navy and Army.
This need has become even more critical amid rising regional tensions with China in the South China Sea. Several military modernization initiatives have faced obstacles, including funding shortages and delays in implementation.
