The Yamuna River in the national capital, Delhi, is heavily polluted. The Delhi government has been making continuous efforts to clean the river, having initiated a project worth ₹9,000 crore for this purpose. However, on Friday, a large amount of white foam was seen floating on the surface of the Yamuna at Kalindi Kunj. This has once again raised questions about the Delhi government’s cleaning initiatives for the river.
White foam appears on the Yamuna when the ammonia levels in its water rise. Currently, this foam can be seen floating on the Yamuna at Kalindi Kunj, highlighting just how polluted and toxic the river water has become. This development at Kalindi Kunj emerged a day after a statement by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, in which she described the inauguration of the ₹9,000 crore project as a “day of joy” for the public.
What did Chief Minister Rekha Gupta say?
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that her government has been working consistently to clean the Yamuna for the past year and a half. Speaking to the media on Thursday, she remarked that it was a day of joy for the people of Delhi, as a project worth approximately ₹9,000 crore had been inaugurated. She noted that within the last 18 months, the government has initiated the rejuvenation of the Yamuna River, adding that they are moving forward with firm determination toward cleaning it.
Pollution levels in the river remain significantly high.
Emphasizing her government’s commitment to cleaning the river, Rekha Gupta stated that the Yamuna would be completely cleaned within a few years. We will provide this special gift to the people of Delhi; however, the appearance of toxic foam in the Yamuna River indicates that pollution levels in the river remain significantly high. This state of the river, ahead of important festivals like Chhath Puja, could be a cause for concern for the devotees.
