His family shared this news through his official Instagram account. It has been announced that his last rites will be performed today at 4:00 PM at the Lodhi Crematorium in Delhi. His passing has sent a wave of mourning through the media and art communities.

Regarded as the ‘Father’ of Photography

Raghu Rai was widely regarded as the ‘father’ of photography and photojournalism in India. His career spanned over 50 years, during which he captured numerous major events across the country and the world through his lens. His photographs are not merely images; they are considered integral parts of history. In 1971, the Government of India honored him with the prestigious Padma Shri award.

Born in 1942 in Jhang (now in Pakistan) in undivided India, Raghu Rai embraced photography as his profession in 1962. He began his career with The Statesman newspaper and later maintained a long-standing association with India Today magazine. He was among the first Indian members of the world-renowned photography agency, Magnum Photos. Over the course of his lifetime, he also authored more than 18 books.
