Five people drowned in the waters of the Ganges in Koyli Khutha village, Bhagalpur. The deceased include four members of the same family and a girl from the neighborhood.

Five people drowned amidst the rising water levels of the Ganges in Bhagalpur, Bihar. Four of the deceased belonged to the same family, while the fifth was a girl from the neighborhood. This tragic incident occurred on Thursday, September 10, 2026, in Koyli Khutha village, under the jurisdiction of the Bypass Police Station. Water had accumulated on both sides of the road. A child suddenly began to drown, and in the attempt to save him, the others also drowned one after another.
Drowned while attempting to save a child
Following the incident, locals hurriedly pulled everyone out of the water and rushed them to Mayaganj Hospital for treatment. However, doctors declared all five dead. The deceased have been identified as Mancho Devi, her daughter Sonakshi Kumari (aged 12–13), and her sons Abhishek (10) and Akshay Kumar (8). The fifth victim has been identified as Anshu Priya, aged approximately 16–17.
A neighbor, Rajesh Kumar, stated that four of the victims were from the same family. According to him, there are ditches filled with water on both sides of the road. When one child began to drown, the others entered the water to save him and fell victim to the tragedy. Rajesh Kumar noted that the water was from the Ganges and had been accumulating there for the past six or seven days.
Gloom descends on the village following the five deaths
Upon receiving news of the incident, police from the Bypass Station arrived at the scene. The Station House Officer (SHO), the Panchayat head, and local residents also reached Mayaganj Hospital. The news of five deaths occurring simultaneously plunged the entire village into mourning. The atmosphere at the hospital became heart-wrenching amidst the wailing of the victims’ relatives.
After confirming the deaths, the police sent all the bodies for post-mortem examinations. Circle Officer (CO) Shivam Kumar stated that compensation of ₹4 lakh each would be provided to the families of the deceased. Currently, 13 to 14 districts in Bihar are in the grip of floods, and amidst this, water-related incidents are also coming to light.
