Indian Ship Sinks Amidst Exchange of Fire Between US and Iran; Innocent Indian Sailor Dies

In a recent clash between the United States and Iran in the Strait of Hormuz, an Indian cargo vessel was caught in the crossfire. One Indian crew member lost his life in this incident, while the remaining 17 crew members on board the ship were successfully rescued.

According to reports, the sailor hailed from the town of Jam Salaya in the Dwarka district of Gujarat and had departed from Dubai carrying cargo bound for Yemen.

A report by The Indian Express identifies the deceased sailor as Altaf Talab Ker. Ker died when the vessel, named ‘Al Faiz Noor Sulemani’—carrying a crew of 18—was caught in the crossfire. The Consulate General of India in Dubai has confirmed the incident and expressed its condolences.

The Consulate posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Deeply saddened to learn of the unfortunate maritime incident resulting in the tragic death of an Indian crew member on board a vessel. The Consulate is in contact with the vessel’s owner and is gathering further details. The Consulate will extend all possible assistance in this matter on a priority basis.”

17 People Rescued from Sinking Ship

Adam Bhaya, General Secretary of the Indian Sailing Vessels Association, stated that the incident occurred while the ship was transiting through the Strait of Hormuz. At the time of the attack, Altaf Ker was near the ship’s engine room. The vessel sustained heavy damage during the exchange of fire and began to sink. Bhaya added that another vessel, the Prem Sagar, arrived at the scene and rescued the remaining 17 crew members. All of them were brought to Dubai on Friday evening.

Assistance Sought from Indian Consulate

Bhaya has written a letter to the Consulate General of India in Dubai regarding the incident. The letter states that this event has instilled deep fear and sorrow within the seafaring community and among the family members of the deceased. He further emphasized that, under such circumstances, the death of an innocent Indian sailor is profoundly tragic and warrants the immediate attention of the concerned authorities. Bhaya has written to the Indian Mission in Dubai, seeking assistance for Ker’s funeral rites. He stated that all members on board the vessel were Indian nationals. The deceased sailor, Ker, hailed from the town of Jam Salaya in Dwarka and had boarded the ship in Dubai on Wednesday.
