वोटर लिस्ट से नाम हटने से आहत बंगाल के आधा दर्ज़न लोगों ने लगाई मौत की गुहार, राष्ट्रपति मुर्मू को भेजा आवेदन

Six residents of Arambagh in West Bengal’s Hooghly district appealed to President Droupadi Murmu on Monday, pleading for death, as their names have allegedly been removed from the voter list following a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. A senior official provided this information. The official submitted the application to Murmu through the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Arambagh. The official noted that the applicants include a retired government school teacher, who visited the SDO’s office to submit their applications along with supporting documents.

The election official stated, “All six of these individuals are residents of Ward Number 6 of the Arambagh Municipality, where a total of 206 names were allegedly removed from the list.” He added that the applicants include Taibunesa Begum, who served as the headmistress of the Gochar Bhagawati Girls’ School in Goghat for nearly 20 years.

According to the official, she claimed that her name was removed from the list despite possessing official documents, including pension papers and a passport. Standing outside the SDO’s office, Taibunesa said, “We have submitted an application for voluntary death, as we can no longer endure this agony.” The applicants were accompanied by local Councilor Swapan Nandi.

Taibunesa expressed apprehension that she would be sent to a detention center because her name had been “removed” from the voter list following the Special Intensive Revision. She stated, “We would prefer to embrace death rather than face detention.”

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been critical of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding the SIR process. She recently declared at an election rally that no one in Bengal would be sent to a detention center. Assembly elections in West Bengal are scheduled to be held in two phases, on April 23 and April 29. The votes will be counted on May 4.
