Boiler blast at Vedanta plant kills 12 in Chhattisgarh: 30–40 workers injured, several critical

Nine people were killed and 15 injured in a boiler blast at the Vedanta Power Plant in the Singhi Tarai area of ​​Chhattisgarh’s Shakti district. District SP Praful Thakur stated that the injured have been taken to a hospital in Raigarh.

A boiler explosion occurred on Tuesday afternoon at the Vedanta Power Plant in the Sakti district of Chhattisgarh. The accident has claimed the lives of 12 laborers. ASP Pankaj Patel has confirmed this information. Four laborers died on the spot. Meanwhile, 18 injured laborers were rushed to Jindal Fortis Hospital in Raigarh, where eight of them succumbed to their injuries. The condition of the remaining 10 injured individuals remains critical; they have sustained burns covering 80% of their bodies.

The incident took place within the jurisdiction of the Dabhra police station. In total, between 30 and 40 laborers have sustained severe burn injuries in the accident. Three injured individuals are currently undergoing treatment at Metro Hospital in Raigarh. Two laborers have been admitted to Apex Hospital, while six critically injured individuals have been referred to Bilaspur for further treatment.

Following the accident, relatives of the laborers staged a protest outside the plant premises. They demanded action against the management as well as compensation. Several laborers are reported missing. The relatives allege that the management is failing to provide any information regarding the situation. Meanwhile, Collector Amrit Vikas Topno has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has announced compensation for the victims. Under the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF), an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh will be provided to the families of each deceased individual, and ₹50,000 will be given to each injured individual. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has expressed his condolences regarding the incident. He stated that strict action would be taken against those found responsible. Additionally, he announced a compensation package of ₹5 lakh each for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 each for the injured.
