The Central Government has appointed Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). He will succeed General Anil Chauhan, whose tenure is set to conclude on May 30. In addition to assuming charge as the country’s highest-ranking military officer, Lieutenant General Raja Subramani will also serve as the Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs within the Government of India, effective from the date he assumes office until further orders.
Announcing this appointment, the Ministry of Defence described Lieutenant General Raja Subramani as a highly distinguished officer with a record of over four decades of exemplary military service. The Ministry of Defence stated, “A highly distinguished officer with over four decades of exemplary service, Lieutenant General Raja Subramani is currently serving as the Military Advisor in the National Security Council Secretariat since September 2025. Prior to this, he served as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff and the GOC-in-C of the Central Command, in addition to commanding key operational units across the Western and Northern fronts.”
Lieutenant General Raja Subramani commenced his military journey at the National Defence Academy and was commissioned into the Garhwal Rifles in December 1985. He built an extensive operational and strategic profile through various pivotal appointments within the Army and the defence establishment.
After undergoing training at the Joint Services Command and Staff College in Bracknell, United Kingdom, he returned to India and assumed charge as the Brigade Major of a Mountain Brigade. Subsequently, he pursued studies at the National Defence College in New Delhi.
The officer’s academic background is also highly impressive. He holds a Master of Arts degree from King’s College London and an M.Phil. in Defence Studies from the University of Madras.
Throughout his long military career spanning over 35 years, he rendered his services across a diverse range of military operations and conflict zones. He also represented India as the Defence Attaché at the Indian Embassy in Astana, Kazakhstan. While holding the rank of Colonel, he served as the Assistant Military Secretary in the Military Secretary Branch at Army Headquarters, and subsequently as the Colonel General Staff (Operations) at the Eastern Command Headquarters. In Jammu and Kashmir, he was posted as the Deputy Commander of a National Rifles Sector.
For his distinguished contributions to national security and military service, Lieutenant General Raja Subramani has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), Sena Medal (SM), and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM).
