Thirteen people were killed and at least 38 others were injured in southwestern Colombia on Saturday in an explosion that targeted passengers traveling on a bus.

The country’s army chief has described the incident as a “terrorist attack.” Violence linked to drug trafficking has been steadily escalating in this region.

Octavio Guzmán, the Governor of the Cauca region, stated that the explosion occurred on the Pan-American Highway within the municipality of Cajibío as the bus was passing through. Cauca’s Health Secretary, Carolina Camargo, confirmed that the injured include five children.

General Hugo López, Commander of the Colombian Armed Forces, stated during a press conference that this was an “act of terrorism,” holding the gang led by the notorious criminal “Iván Mordisco”—as well as the Jaime Martínez faction—responsible for the attack.

Both groups are dissident factions of the now-disbanded Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) that remain active in the region. These groups refused to recognize the peace accord signed with the government in 2016.

Condemning the attack, Colombian President Gustavo Petro stated that those responsible for killing innocent civilians—including several indigenous people—are terrorists, fascists, and drug traffickers.

This marks the latest in a series of explosions carried out in recent days targeting public infrastructure. Over the past two days alone, at least 26 violent incidents have been reported across southwestern Colombia.
