Uttar Pradesh: A tragic road accident occurred in Saharanpur on Independence Day. In the Sarsawa police station area, on the Dehradun-Ambala Road, a car lost control, crossed the divider, and collided with a vehicle coming from the opposite direction. Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) DIG Parminder Singh and his driver, Ravi Shankar, died instantly at the scene. Several others sustained serious injuries. Police arrived at the site and admitted the injured to the Government Medical College.
According to reports, the accident took place around 10:30 AM near the Jhabiran Cut in the Sarsawa police station area. SP (Traffic) Shailendra Srivastava stated that DIG Parminder Singh (48) was traveling towards Ambala for official work after completing training in Mussoorie. As his car reached the Jhabiran Cut, it lost control and struck the divider. The impact caused the car to vault into the other lane, where it collided violently with an oncoming vehicle. The collision was so severe that the front sections of both vehicles were mangled.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud, explosion-like sound at the time of the accident. Following the crash, the occupants of both vehicles were trapped inside. Bystanders immediately initiated rescue efforts and alerted the police. Upon receiving the information, Sarsawa police arrived at the scene and, with the help of locals, extricated the injured trapped in the vehicles. Everyone was transported to a nearby hospital by ambulance. Doctors declared the DIG and his driver dead on arrival.
DM Inquires About the Injured
District Magistrate (DM) Arvind Chauhan stated that the DIG was originally from Rupnagar (Ropar) in Punjab and was currently posted in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir. He was en route to Ambala after completing his training in Mussoorie. His gunner, Jayram, also sustained serious injuries in the accident. Jayram, 36, is reportedly a native of Patiala, and he is currently undergoing treatment. Three people were traveling in the car involved in the collision; they also sustained injuries. They have been identified as Gurunanak Singh (49), Devendra Kaur (55), and Gurnam Singh (55), all reportedly residents of Karnal, Haryana. Devendra Kaur is said to be in critical condition. All the injured are currently undergoing treatment at the medical college.
Traffic on the highway was disrupted for some time following the accident. The police cleared the damaged vehicles and restored the flow of traffic. Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident. Preliminary reports suggest the Scorpio lost control and struck the divider, though the exact cause will only be confirmed once the investigation is complete.
The accident occurred approximately 25 kilometers from the district headquarters. Upon receiving news of the incident, police and administrative officials inspected the scene and inquired about the condition of the injured. The deaths and injuries resulting from the accident have cast a pall of gloom over the area.
SSP Abhinandan stated that a thorough investigation is underway at the scene to determine the exact cause of the accident. Authorities are examining how the crash occurred and what led the vehicle to go out of control. The police have begun the process of collecting necessary evidence from the site.
News of the senior ITBP officer’s death in the accident has sent a wave of grief through the police, administration, and security forces. The incident has once again raised serious questions regarding road safety, vehicle speed, and vehicle control on the Dehradun-Ambala highway.
