A bridge costing approximately ₹10 crore, built over a river in Dhondha village (Pratappur block, Surajpur district, Chhattisgarh), was washed away following heavy rains. After intense rainfall on Thursday, the river’s water level and flow continued to rise throughout the night. When villagers visited the site on Friday morning, they discovered that a large section of the bridge had been swept away; some pillars had been uprooted, while other slabs had collapsed into the river. With a significant portion of the bridge gone, residents of dozens of villages are now facing a transportation crisis.
Questions Raised Since Construction
According to media reports, villagers state that concerns regarding the bridge’s quality had been raised ever since its construction. Cracks had begun to appear in various sections of the structure. Villagers alleged that substandard materials were used during construction, rendering the bridge inherently weak. They claim that cracks became visible once vehicular movement began and the condition deteriorated over time. However, these allegations have not been independently verified.
The collapse of the bridge has caused the greatest hardship for those living in the vicinity. It served as a vital route for residents of nearby villages, and its destruction has now created significant commuting difficulties.
