In a significant decision, the Punjab government has officially declared three major religious sites in the state—the Walled City of Amritsar, Sri Anandpur Sahib in Rupnagar district, and Talwandi Sabo (Sri Damdama Sahib) in Bathinda district—as holy cities. The government stated that this decision was necessary to preserve the religious, historical, and spiritual identity of these cities.

Notification issued after Governor’s approval

A notification issued by the Home Affairs Department clarified that this decision has received the formal approval of the Governor of Punjab. Following this, the relevant departments have been directed to strictly enforce the new rules within the notified municipal limits of these three cities. This notification will soon be published in the official gazette of Punjab.

The administration has been clearly told that laxity will not be tolerated at any level and strict action will be taken against those violating the rules.

Decision Linked to Chief Minister’s Previous Announcements

This decision is also linked to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s earlier announcements. Last month, he spoke about developing Sri Anandpur Sahib as a Heritage Street City. In a public meeting, he appealed to the people that it was everyone’s collective responsibility to maintain the city’s religious dignity and spiritual character.

The Chief Minister also announced that a heritage street would be constructed in Anandpur Sahib, completely transforming the city. He placed special emphasis on preserving the sanctity of this historic city, associated with the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur.
