A major accident occurred in Los Angeles, USA, on Tuesday, September 15. A helicopter used by NBC News crashed in a parking area, resulting in the deaths of at least three people. At the time of the accident, the news team was reporting on a nearby bus crash. NBC4 Los Angeles anchor Colleen Williams announced during a live broadcast that the station’s helicopter had crashed shortly before 7 PM.
“We are going to take a few minutes to process this,” she said, her voice trembling. Shortly thereafter, NBC4’s live coverage was abruptly interrupted.
Helicopter Crashes While Covering Bus Accident
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the helicopter crashed near a storage facility in Chatsworth, in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles.
News teams were covering a bus accident at the time; that bus crash had left at least two people dead and six injured. Following the helicopter crash, another person was transported to the hospital, though details regarding their condition were not immediately available.
A video recorded from inside the helicopter has also surfaced, capturing the final moments of the crash. The video shows the helicopter hovering over the site of the bus accident. Suddenly, the camera begins to shake violently, and the helicopter is seen plummeting to the ground.
Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson Captain Brandon Silverman stated that the helicopter crashed onto or near several vehicles parked at a large, single-story building. It was not immediately clear how many of the deceased were inside the helicopter. Silverman noted that at least one of the victims was found outside the helicopter in the parking area.
More than 50 firefighters responded to the scene following the crash. The resulting fire damaged four vehicles and two storage containers. The blaze was brought under control by Tuesday evening. According to Silverman, the helicopter has been almost completely destroyed. He stated that firefighters would need to clear the wreckage to determine how many people were on board at the time of the crash.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will investigate the accident.
