West Bengal IPS officer Bushra Bano has recently been making headlines. She is the subject of discussion due to a video in which she began by saying “Assalamu Alaikum.” This video has sparked a political controversy, and a complaint has been lodged against her with the West Bengal Home Secretary. Here is a look at the story of IPS Bushra Bano.
Who is Bushra Bano?
Bushra Bano’s story is an inspiration to many. She was born in the Kannauj district of Uttar Pradesh. She pursued a PhD in Management Studies from Aligarh Muslim University and also qualified for the UGC NET-JRF. Bushra did not give up on her dreams after marriage; while living in Saudi Arabia, she worked as an Assistant Professor. Upon returning to India, she decided to appear for the UPSC examination.
Cleared UPSC Twice
Bushra first cleared the UPSC exam in 2018, securing an All India Rank of 277 and a selection for the Indian Railway Traffic Service. However, as she was pregnant with her second child at the time, she could not join the service. She appeared for the exam again in 2019, achieving an All India Rank of 234, and was selected for the Indian Police Service (IPS).
Current Posting
Bushra Bano is a 2021-batch IPS officer belonging to the West Bengal cadre. Her first posting was as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in the Hooghly Rural district. She was subsequently promoted to the rank of Additional Superintendent of Police (Additional SP). Currently, she is posted as an Additional SP in Kharagpur, West Bengal.
The Cause of the Controversy
Bushra shared a video on social media recounting her journey. At the beginning of the video, she greeted viewers with “Assalamu Alaikum,” used the term “Insha’Allah” during the narrative, and concluded by saying “JazakAllah.” An organization named the Hindu Legal Fund has lodged a complaint regarding this video. The organization alleges that IPS officer Bushra Bano used Urdu and Islamic greetings in her video but did not say “Jai Hind” or “Vande Mataram.”
