Continuous rainfall over the past 24 hours across most parts of Uttarakhand has caused river water levels to rise, while landslides in mountainous areas have blocked over a hundred roads. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has issued a ‘Red Alert’ for very heavy rainfall in seven districts—including Dehradun—and an ‘Orange Alert’ for the remaining districts for Thursday.
In view of the heavy rainfall warning issued by the Meteorological Department, the administration has been instructed to remain alert and exercise caution; additionally, schools for classes 1 through 12 remained closed in four districts, including Dehradun, due to the rain.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall was recorded at several locations across both the Garhwal and Kumaon regions of Uttarakhand over the last 24 hours.
According to official data, rainfall recorded during this period included 206 mm in Kashipur, 190 mm in Jaspur, 180 mm in Laksar, 160 mm in Kotdwar, 132.9 mm in Haridwar, 126.2 mm in Roorkee, 118.5 mm in Betalghat, 115.2 mm in Tehri, 115 mm in Roshanabad, 107.5 mm in Nainital, and 105 mm in Narendra Nagar.
Data further indicates rainfall of 100 mm in Dhanaulti, 98.6 mm in Devprayag, 93 mm in Pauri, 92.3 mm in Ranikhet, 79.4 mm in Tehri, 76.4 mm in Jolly Grant, 70.8 mm in Dehradun, 70.1 mm in Mussoorie, 64.4 mm in Rishikesh, 63 mm in Almora, and 50.4 mm in Rudraprayag. Moderate rainfall was recorded in other areas as well. According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), continuous rainfall triggered landslides and rockfalls in several mountainous areas, disrupting traffic on 107 routes across the state—including nine state highways and one Border Roads Organisation (BRO) road. Efforts to clear and reopen these routes are underway.
Information from the SEOC indicates that an old, unoccupied house in the Kaddukhal area of Tehri district was damaged on Wednesday evening after being struck by a landslide. However, the administration had already evacuated two restaurants and some shanties located in the potential danger zone as a precautionary measure.
Citing the Central Water Commission, the SEOC reported rising water levels in several rivers: the Alaknanda at Srinagar, Pindar at Karnaprayag, Ganga at Devprayag and Rishikesh, Kali at Dharchula, Saryu at Pithoragarh, and Gauri at Jauljibi. Although the rivers are currently flowing below the danger mark, they are being continuously monitored. The Dehradun-based Meteorological Centre has issued a ‘Red Alert’ for seven districts—Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital, and Champawat—predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall at some locations, with the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and spells of very intense to extremely intense rainfall are also anticipated. Forecasts for the remaining districts of the state indicate heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and intense rain. The Meteorological Centre has also issued a ‘Red Alert’ for Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital, and Champawat districts for Friday. Additionally, an ‘Orange Alert’ has been issued for Dehradun, Pauri, and Bageshwar districts, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas. In view of the rainfall warning, the SEOC has instructed all District Magistrates to maintain special vigilance in vulnerable areas, keep relief and rescue teams on alert, ensure coordination among all officials and departments involved in disaster management, continuously monitor the condition of roads, and ensure prompt action in any emergency situation.
Vinod Kumar Suman, the state’s Disaster Management Secretary, has appealed to residents to avoid unnecessary travel during this period and to refrain from visiting mountainous and landslide-prone areas in particular. Suman has advised people to stay away from rivers, streams, and seasonal water channels, and to remain in safe locations during inclement weather.
He urged people to immediately contact the local administration or emergency services in case of any emergency and to rely only on information obtained from official sources.
Schools for classes 1 to 12 remained closed in Dehradun, Pauri, Tehri, and Haridwar districts due to the heavy rainfall warning.
