Tripura: Flood-like conditions prevail in several parts of Tripura due to continuous rainfall over the past two days. One person has died, low-lying areas are inundated, hundreds of homes have been damaged, and over 2,500 people have had to seek shelter in relief camps. On Wednesday, a 23-year-old man, Shivam Debnath, drowned in the swollen Juri River in Dharmanagar, North Tripura district.

In Unakoti district, rising water levels in the Manu River have flooded several low-lying areas and roads, causing concern among locals. Residents fear that if the rain persists, the situation could mirror the devastating floods of 2018, which severely affected Kailashahar. Floodwaters from the Khowai River have entered several residential areas in the Teliamura sub-division of Khowai district, forcing a large number of people to take shelter in nearby schools.

According to the State Emergency Operations Center, 22 relief camps have been opened across the state, sheltering 2,589 people from 434 families displaced by heavy rains and strong winds. Reports indicate that approximately 300 houses have been damaged; of these, 44 were completely destroyed, 77 sustained damage, and 179 were partially damaged. Dhalai, Khowai, and Gomati are among the worst-affected districts. Landslides were reported at Mogpara and several other locations along the Assam-Agartala National Highway in Dhalai district; disaster response teams acted swiftly to restore road connectivity.

The Meteorological Department had previously issued a ‘Yellow Alert’ for Tripura, warning of heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms over a five-day period. Fresh warnings indicate that heavy rainfall is likely to continue in the coming days—particularly in the West Tripura, Dhalai, Khowai, and Gomati districts—prompting the administration to remain on high alert.
