On Friday, locals in Sheikhpura, Bihar, created a commotion upon reaching the Circle Officer’s (CO) office. Hundreds of women gathered outside the office, surrounded the officials, and began protesting while brandishing brooms. Amidst the protest, a woman in the crowd struck the Circle Officer with a broom, hitting him on the head. Allegations have also surfaced that the mob held administrative officials hostage and attempted to snatch weapons from police personnel.
The Ghat Kusumbha block of Sheikhpura has been grappling with floods for the past 15 days. Floodwaters have entered the homes of hundreds of residents. Villagers have been on a hunger strike for four days, demanding that the area be declared flood-affected. The agitation intensified on Friday when villagers surrounded the Circle Officer’s office.
Visuals show women brandishing brooms and arguing with officials. A woman was also seen attempting to snatch a rifle from a police officer. Chaos erupted at the scene following the incident; however, other villagers intervened, pacified the women, and managed to bring the situation under control.
Subsequently, the Circle Officer visited the protest site and tried to persuade the protesters to end their hunger strike. The villagers remain adamant on their demand to have the area declared flood-affected.
SDM Priyanka Kumari told reporters that the villagers had gathered to demand that the area be declared flood-affected. “We have sent a proposal to the committee constituted under the chairmanship of the District Magistrate. Further action will be taken in accordance with departmental directives,” she said, adding that the government is providing essential supplies to the flood-affected area. He stated that they received information indicating the BDO and CO had been held captive by the people. The SDM said that necessary action would be taken against those involved in such activities.
Former MLA Vijay Samrat stated that the local residents’ demand is legitimate. People want the area to be declared flood-affected. We, too, want the block area to be declared flood-hit; the entire region is currently surrounded by water.
