An unusual incident unfolded in the Supreme Court on Friday when a petitioner, arguing his own case, engaged in unruly behavior, used abusive language, and threw his papers inside the courtroom. Reacting swiftly to the sudden outburst, security personnel immediately restrained him and escorted him out of the courtroom.

The incident occurred during the hearing of a petition challenging an order passed by the Allahabad High Court. It took place before a bench comprising Justice KV Viswanathan and Justice Alok Aradhe, briefly disrupting the Supreme Court’s proceedings. Lawyers, officials, and security personnel present in the courtroom were left stunned by the incident. A video of the event is also going viral on social media.

The video shows the petitioner demanding the registration of an FIR against an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) from Lucknow and a private company as soon as the hearing began. Addressing the bench led by Justice Viswanathan, he said, “Honorable judicial servant, I order you to issue an order to register an FIR against the ACP… of Lucknow.”

Surprised, the Supreme Court asked, “Are you issuing orders to us?” The petitioner replied, “That is all from my side. Everything is on record.” Immediately afterwards, he tossed papers related to his case into the air and began using abusive language in the courtroom. During this outburst, he also made objectionable remarks against the Chief Justice. Chaos ensued in the courtroom for a brief period. Security personnel then intervened and forcibly removed the petitioner, allowing proceedings to resume.

The matter before the bench led by Justice Viswanathan concerned a petition challenging an order passed by the Allahabad High Court. Court proceedings had previously been disrupted by another incident at the Supreme Court a few months ago, when advocate Rakesh Kishore attempted to throw an object at a bench presided over by the then-CJI BR Gavai. Although the then CJI Gavai had initially decided not to take action against the advocate in this matter, Attorney General R. Venkataramani later granted permission to initiate criminal contempt proceedings against Rakesh Kishore. He stated that the advocate’s conduct fell within the category of criminal contempt under the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971, and was intended to undermine the dignity and authority of the Supreme Court.

During a subsequent hearing, the then CJI Gavai remarked that while he and his fellow judges had been deeply shocked by the incident, they now considered it a closed chapter. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had described the advocate’s conduct as completely inexcusable, emphasizing the necessity of upholding the institutional dignity of the Supreme Court.
