Thirty-four children fell ill on Tuesday after consuming the mid-day meal at a government school in Bihar’s Nalanda district. The incident occurred at a school in Parasi, under the jurisdiction of the Noorsarai police station. According to the principal, after some students had eaten, children seated in the second row complained that the food lacked salt.

It is reported that containers of salt and detergent powder were kept in the same spot in the kitchen. Consequently, the cook mistakenly added detergent powder to the food, believing it to be salt.

According to a Nalanda district administration official, 17 boys and 17 girls from the Parasi middle school fell ill after the meal. They were subsequently taken to Bihar Sharif Sadar Hospital for treatment. The district administration stated that all the children are currently healthy and out of danger.

What the Principal Said

School Principal Shailendra Kumar Singh stated that the mid-day meal is supplied by a local NGO, and on Tuesday, the children were served soybean and rice in accordance with the scheduled menu. Shortly after eating, several children began vomiting and complained of dizziness.

The principal mentioned that the children were administered first aid at the school, but when their condition did not improve, they were taken to Sadar Hospital.

Samples to be Tested

Officials stated that food samples would be tested. Meanwhile, officials from the Education Department and the local administration visited the hospital where the children had been admitted. Bihar Minister Shravan Kumar also visited Sadar Hospital to meet the children and instructed the doctors to ensure proper treatment.

According to the district administration, medical examinations confirmed that all the children were healthy and out of danger; no adverse health effects were detected. Officials stated that, as of now, no FIR or formal complaint has been lodged regarding the incident.
