Nine people have died so far in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, after allegedly consuming toxic liquor, while 35 others have been admitted to the hospital. The administration has sealed six liquor shops and initiated an investigation.

Nine people have died so far in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district after allegedly consuming spurious liquor, while 35 others have been hospitalized. Some of the patients are reported to be in critical condition; they have been referred to Bundelkhand Medical College and the Sagar District Hospital.
Door-to-door checks in three villages
District Collector Pratibha Pal stated that reports of illness and deaths allegedly linked to the consumption of illicit liquor began emerging on Sunday morning. Following this, medical examinations were initiated at the Civil Hospital, and medical teams along with administrative officials were deployed to the affected areas.
Screening is being conducted for individuals who consumed liquor in the vicinity, including in Naura and Ghughru villages. Treating doctors have reported symptoms such as cyanosis (bluish discoloration of the body) and muscle stiffness in some patients.
Advice for those who consumed liquor in the last 24–48 hours
Collector Pratibha Pal has urged anyone who has consumed any form of liquor in the past 24 to 48 hours, or is exhibiting any symptoms, to undergo an immediate medical check-up.
She stated that teams comprising doctors and Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) are conducting screenings in identified villages, including Naura and Ghughru Khurd. People have been advised to visit the Civil Hospital or the nearest health center for a check-up.
Six liquor shops sealed; samples being collected
As a precautionary measure, six liquor shops in the area have been sealed. Officials have been instructed to collect samples of the suspected spurious liquor. The administration is closely monitoring the situation.
Senior officials, including the Sagar Divisional Commissioner, Inspector General (IG), District Collector, and Superintendent of Police (SP), visited Naura and Ghughru Khurd villages. They met with the affected families and reviewed the treatment arrangements for the hospitalized patients.
Police investigating the source of the liquor
The police have launched an investigation to trace the source of the suspected spurious liquor and identify those involved in its supply. Instructions have been issued to take strict legal action against those involved in the illicit liquor trade.
A police officer stated that the actual cause of death could only be confirmed after the post-mortem examination.

Meanwhile, the Sagar district administration has urged individuals experiencing vomiting, headache, fever, or other symptoms after consuming alcohol to immediately visit the nearest health center.
