Begusarai, Bihar, villagers have staged a protest against the poor condition of a road—a move that has captured widespread attention. Fed up with the long-standing, crumbling state of the road and the numerous potholes, the residents decided to name these pits after their local elected representatives. Some have been labeled ‘Giriraj Kund,’ while others have been named ‘Kundan Kund.’ The villagers created signs displaying the faces of MP Giriraj Singh and BJP MLA Kundan Kumar and placed them beside the potholes. A video of this protest is now going viral on social media.
The incident took place in the Parra Panchayat of the Birpur block in Begusarai district. The Parra-Saronja road has reportedly been in a state of disrepair for a long time. By placing signs bearing the names of their representatives next to the potholes, the villagers expressed their deep dissatisfaction. They state that the road remains in a poor condition, and the lack of repairs causes daily hardship for the local population.
Protest through naming: ‘Giriraj Kund’ and ‘Kundan Kund’
The villagers opted for a symbolic form of protest. They designated the potholes with names like ‘Giriraj Kund’ and ‘Kundan Kund’ and installed signs featuring the photographs of the MP and the MLA at the sites. In a viral video, several young men are seen approaching various potholes on the road, placing signs next to them. Through this unique method, the villagers aim to highlight the poor condition of the road and draw the attention of the responsible elected representatives.
According to local residents, the Parra-Saronja road has been in a dilapidated state for decades. Although the road was reconstructed at one point, its condition deteriorated again over time. Villagers allege that no concrete steps have been taken to repair the road in the last six years—a period that includes the time since Kundan Kumar became the MLA in 2020. So far, there has been no response from the concerned elected representatives or the relevant department regarding these allegations.
Problems worsen during the rainy season; threat of protest
Large potholes scattered across the road cause significant difficulties for those traveling by motorcycle, rickshaw, auto-rickshaw, or car. Villagers state that the situation becomes even worse during the rainy season; as the potholes fill with water, it becomes impossible to gauge their depth, creating a constant risk of accidents.
Despite the Parra Panchayat being labeled a “model panchayat,” villagers have raised questions about the deplorable state of the road. They argue that, despite various claims of development, no permanent solution has been found for this issue. Naming the potholes after the elected representatives is a way for the residents to express their frustration. They have issued a clear warning: if the road is not repaired soon, they will launch a protest. It remains to be seen whether this unique form of protest and the viral video will lead to any action regarding the repair of the road.
