A heart-wrenching road accident occurred late Saturday night in the Mau district of Uttar Pradesh. Five people lost their lives in this tragedy. The accident took place on the Gorakhpur-Varanasi four-lane highway near Kusumha Basharatpur, within the jurisdiction of the Dohrighat police station.
A speeding Scorpio SUV went out of control, first crashing into the central divider before veering into the opposite lane and colliding head-on with a trailer truck. Providing details of the incident, Jitendra Singh, the Circle Officer (CO) of Ghosi, stated that the police received information regarding the road accident late at night, following which a police team was immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon reaching the site, officers discovered that a vehicle had struck the divider, crossed over into the opposite lane, and collided directly with an oncoming vehicle. A total of five people died in the accident.
The police team initiated rescue operations with the assistance of local residents and a relief squad. Cutting through the wreckage to extract the victims proved to be a time-consuming task due to the sheer force of the collision. After approximately two and a half hours of arduous effort, all five occupants were finally extricated from the vehicle; however, they had already succumbed to their injuries by that time.
According to reports, the victims—residents of the Gorakhpur district—had traveled to Ranchi, Jharkhand, to attend their daughter’s wedding. Following the conclusion of the wedding ceremonies, they were returning home by road along with their family. There were a total of five people on board the vehicle. Between approximately 2:30 AM and 3:00 AM on Saturday night, as the vehicle approached Kusumha Basharatpur, the driver reportedly dozed off at the wheel. Consequently, the Scorpio spiraled out of control; it first struck the central divider and then veered into the opposite lane, where it collided violently with an oncoming trailer truck.
The impact of the collision was so severe that the vehicle was completely mangled, trapping all its occupants inside. Upon receiving news of the incident, the Dohrighat police arrived at the scene. Relief and rescue operations were launched with the assistance of local residents. The bodies of the deceased have been sent to the District Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The accident has cast a pall of gloom over the entire region and the villages of the deceased. The victims have been identified, and their families have been duly informed of the tragedy. All bodies have been sent for a post-mortem examination, and further legal action is being initiated. Additionally, the wrecked vehicles have been removed, and traffic has been restored.
