Indonesia: When a plane suddenly disappears from radar while in flight, concern and anxiety are inevitable. A similar scenario unfolded on Saturday (January 17) in Indonesia’s South Sulawesi province when an ATR 400 aircraft flying from Yogyakarta to Makassar lost contact with radar during its flight. A search and rescue operation has been launched in the area.

According to reports, the aircraft was flying from Yogyakarta to Makassar and was scheduled to land at Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Makassar. Contact with the aircraft, operated by Indonesia Air Transport, was lost at approximately 1:17 PM (local time). The incident reportedly occurred near Maros Regency, as the plane was flying over that area.

According to local media reports, as soon as the loss of contact was reported, Indonesia’s search and rescue agency, Basarnas, based in Makassar, sprang into action. Basarnas coordinated with the air navigation service provider, AirNav Indonesia, to obtain the coordinates of the suspected area. Based on these coordinates, a search team was immediately dispatched.

Andi Sultan, head of operations at the Basarnas Makassar office, stated, “Based on the coordinates received from AirNav, our teams have departed for the Liang-Liang area of Maros Regency.” He added that according to initial information, the aircraft was flying from Yogyakarta to Makassar when contact was lost.

A total of three teams, comprising approximately 25 personnel, have been deployed in this joint search and rescue operation. These teams are conducting searches from different directions, considering the geographical features of the area, to find the aircraft or any related clues as quickly as possible.

Meanwhile, local police are also involved in confirming and investigating the incident. Maros Police Chief Douglas Mahendrajaya told local media that the police had received reports of the loss of contact with the aircraft and are in the process of confirming the information. He said, “The information about the missing flight is correct, and we are currently confirming it.”

This incident has also brought back memories of previous plane crashes in Indonesia. It’s worth noting that in September of last year, a plane crashed in Indonesia’s Central Papua province. All four people on board died in that accident. At the time, I Wayan Suyatna, head of the local search and rescue office, stated that the wreckage of the crashed plane was found in a deep valley in Mimika Regency. The bodies of those killed in the accident were taken to a hospital in Timika, the regency’s capital.

A search and rescue operation is currently underway for the missing ATR 400 aircraft in South Sulawesi. AirNav Indonesia, Basarnas (the Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency), and local police are working together to determine what happened to the aircraft and its current location.
