The death toll from floods in Assam has risen to 87. Officials stated that approximately 1.3 lakh people remain affected by the disaster, even though water levels have receded in most of the state’s inundated areas.

With the death of two more people due to floods in Assam, the death toll from this natural disaster has risen to 87. Officials stated on Tuesday that despite receding water levels in most of the state’s inundated areas, approximately 1.3 lakh people remain affected by the disaster.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya over the next few days, which could impact several districts in Assam bordering these two states.
The weather office stated, “Weather patterns indicate extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms (Orange and Red alerts) in most areas of Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills, and East Jaintia Hills districts, as well as Arunachal Pradesh’s Papum Pare, Kurung Kumey, East Kameng, East Siang, Lohit, and Changlang districts. This could affect the neighboring districts of Assam.”
The weather department has also issued a ‘Yellow Alert’ for most parts of Nagaland, which could impact Assam’s Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat, and Golaghat districts.
According to a bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Monday night, two deaths were reported from Sivasagar district in the last 24 hours. With these fatalities, the total death toll from floods this year has reached 87.
An ASDMA official said, “Although rainfall was reported overnight across most of Assam’s flood-affected upper districts, water levels in the inundated villages are receding, bringing some relief to the villagers.” A total of 128,000 people across six districts remain affected by the floods. Sivasagar is the worst-hit district, with over 55,000 people affected. Meanwhile, over 35,000 people in Charaideo and more than 20,000 in Jorhat have been affected by the floods. The ASDMA bulletin states that damage to various infrastructure—including embankments, houses, roads, schools, and other public assets—has been reported from different areas.
The bulletin also notes that the Dhansiri River is currently flowing above the danger mark at Numaligarh.
