The impact of the torrential rain that began early Wednesday morning is being felt across Uttarakhand. Daily life has been disrupted by the continuous downpour. Rivers and seasonal streams are overflowing in several districts, while the risk of landslides has increased in mountainous regions. Meanwhile, a holiday has been declared for all schools and Anganwadi centers in Dehradun.
Disruption to Daily Life
Traffic has been affected on several routes due to the rain, and vehicle speeds have slowed down. The administration is keeping a close watch on the situation in vulnerable areas. Amidst the Meteorological Department’s alert, disaster management and district administration teams remain vigilant and are monitoring the situation.
The administration has appealed to the public to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from the banks of rivers, drains, and seasonal streams, and adhere to the advisories issued by the Meteorological Department and local authorities.
Schools and Anganwadi Centers Closed in Dehradun
Meanwhile, in view of the heavy rainfall predicted by the Meteorological Department, a one-day holiday has been declared for Wednesday for all schools (Classes 1 to 12) and Anganwadi centers in the Dehradun district. The district administration stated that heavy rain could lead to untoward incidents. This decision was taken to prioritize safety as a disaster mitigation measure.
A notice issued by District Magistrate Ashish Chauhan stated, “Given the current rainfall in the district and the updated forecast/nowcast issued on August 4 by the Meteorological Department (Dehradun) and the NDMA’s ‘Sachet’ portal, there is a likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall in some parts of Dehradun over the next 24 hours. During this period, lightning strikes and spells of extremely intense rainfall may also occur. In light of this, the Meteorological Department has issued an ‘Orange Alert’ for the district.” The notice stated, “All government, government-aided, and private schools (Classes 1 to 12) as well as all Anganwadi centers in Dehradun district will remain closed today. The Chief Education Officer and the District Programme Officer of Dehradun have been directed to ensure compliance with this order across all educational institutions and Anganwadi centers in their respective jurisdictions.”
Agencies instructed to remain on high alert
Meanwhile, in view of the heavy rainfall across the state, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami instructed the Secretary of Disaster Management on Wednesday morning to remain on high alert. The Chief Minister directed the SDRF, NDRF, and all district administrations to exercise utmost vigilance and ensure immediate relief and rescue operations in the event of any emergency.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has appealed to all residents and tourists to exercise special caution given the weather conditions, avoid unnecessary travel, and undertake journeys only if absolutely essential.
