India and Iran are important trading partners
According to information available on the website of the Indian Embassy in Tehran, “India and Iran are important trading partners. In recent years, India has been one of Iran’s five largest trading partners. India exports goods such as rice, tea, sugar, medicines, synthetic fibers, electrical equipment, and artificial jewelry to Iran. India imports dry fruits, chemical substances, and glass products from Iran.”
India a key partner in Iran’s Chabahar Port
India and Iran signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2015 to jointly develop the Shahid Beheshti Port in Chabahar, Iran. This port is very important for India as it allows India to trade with Afghanistan and Central Asia.
Recently, the US extended the sanctions waiver granted to India for continuing its operations at the Chabahar port for another six months, effective from October 29. This is considered a diplomatic victory for India, especially amidst the broader tensions related to US sanctions on Iran and Russia.
Following this relief, India can develop and operate the Chabahar port without any US sanctions until April of next year. This port is strategically and commercially very important for India. This port is crucial for India’s access to Afghanistan and Central Asia, allowing it to bypass Pakistan for trade and connectivity.
According to experts, China is Iran’s largest trading partner, but besides India, countries like the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Turkey may also face difficulties due to the new US tariffs.
