Rains wreak havoc in Pakistan’s Punjab, over 70 dead in past 48 hours

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning of more heavy rainfall from July 20. The PDMA has also warned of high-level flooding in the Indus River at Kalabagh and Chashma in the next 24 hours.

Monsoon rains have wreaked havoc in Pakistan’s Punjab province. With 10 more deaths on Friday, 71 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents in the province in the last 48 hours.

Pakistan’s leading newspaper ‘Dawn’ quoted the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) as saying that 123 people have died and 462 have been injured since June 25. During this period, record rainfall led to flood situation, inundating residential areas. According to the PDMA, 71 deaths were recorded in the last two days alone.

On Friday, three people each died in Lahore and Chiniot, two in Okara, and one each in Chakwal and Sargodha. Two people were swept away by strong currents in Chakwal, whose bodies were recovered on Friday, while one person died after being trapped under debris when a roof collapsed due to heavy rains. Chakwal remained one of the worst-hit areas of the province, where record rainfall was recorded in the last three days.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning of more torrential rains from July 20. The PDMA has also warned of high-level flooding in the Indus river at Kalabagh and Chashma in the next 24 hours. The administration has been instructed to remain alert and take necessary steps.

Rescue operations are going on in full swing to evacuate people from flood-affected areas. PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia said that more than 1 thousand people have been evacuated to safer places in Pothohar region, including 398 in Jhelum, 209 in Chakwal and 450 in Rawalpindi. According to Rescue 1122 spokesperson Farooq Ahmed, three people lost their lives in accidents caused by heavy rains in Chakwal.

The district is one of the worst-affected areas due to record rainfall in the last three days. Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Chief Minister of Punjab province in Pakistan, may visit the district on Saturday.
