Prayagraj: Water rises up to 6 feet in several houses; residents ask, ‘What will we eat, where will we go?’

According to locals, the ongoing ‘CM Grid’ work in the area has already caused widespread disarray. The situation has been further aggravated by the accumulation of rainwater in the construction zones.

Heavy rainfall in Prayagraj exposed the flaws in the city’s drainage system. Roads in several areas—including Kareli, Mundera Mandi, the CMP Bus Stand in Civil Lines, and George Town—were submerged. Conditions were such that people had to wade through knee-deep water. The situation was worst in George Town, where the accumulated water reached the doorsteps of many homes.

Drain water spills onto George Town roads

Roads across the George Town area were inundated. Following the heavy downpour, it became difficult to distinguish between the road and the drains. The wheels and lower sections of many cars parked along the roadside were submerged. According to locals, the area faces similar waterlogging during every spell of rain. Clogged drains and sewers prevent proper drainage, causing rainwater to mix with filthy drain water and spill onto the streets.

The waterlogging also affected the George Town police station; drain water entered the station premises, forcing police personnel to engage in clearing the water themselves. The flooding disrupted their work. Locals remarked that if water could reach the police station, one could easily imagine the plight of nearby homes and shops.

Roads submerged in Kareli and Mundera Mandi

Roads in Kareli and Mundera Mandi were also submerged following the rain, causing significant inconvenience to pedestrians and motorists. In many places, people were seen wading through knee-deep water. The waterlogging slowed down traffic, and commuters took longer to reach their destinations.

People also faced difficulties due to waterlogging near the CMP Bus Stand in Civil Lines. Pedestrians and motorists heading towards the bus stand had to wade through the water, and traffic flow was disrupted by the accumulation on the road. Demands of Local Residents

According to local residents, the ongoing ‘CM Grid’ work in the area has already caused widespread disarray. The situation has been further aggravated by the accumulation of rainwater in the construction zones. Residents have demanded that the Municipal Corporation and relevant departments immediately clean the drains and ensure regular maintenance, alongside establishing a permanent drainage system.
