Chaos erupted among a crowd of fans gathered to celebrate in New York’s Times Square on Thursday when the sound of rapid gunfire rang out. Reports indicate that armed suspects opened fire; one suspect has been apprehended. This marks the second shooting incident in Times Square within three days. The police are currently investigating the matter.
Panic gripped the area after multiple shots were fired in Times Square on Thursday. Tourists and bystanders scrambled to flee for safety, leading to a chaotic scene with people running in all directions. Police stated that a suspect was quickly pursued.
The Fire Department reported that one person was taken to the hospital, though no further details were provided. Webcam footage showed at least two individuals dressed in black entering the crowded intersection and firing what appeared to be handguns.
Panicked pedestrians were seen running or trying to take cover to save their lives, while the suspects were also spotted fleeing along the street. The shooting occurred just meters away from a parked police vehicle. The incident took place around 3:40 PM, at a time when Lower Manhattan streets were packed with people gathered for a parade honoring the New York Knicks, the NBA champions.
Officials stated that 10,000 police officers had been deployed to secure the event honoring the Knicks—the team’s first championship in 53 years. Police noted that a 17-year-old boy had been shot in the heart of Times Square the previous weekend while fans were celebrating the Knicks’ victory over San Antonio in the finals; officers had to transport the victim to the hospital themselves because an ambulance could not navigate through the crowd.
