It has been confirmed that approximately 35 people were killed in a massive terrorist attack on Thursday at the international airport in Niamey, the capital of the African nation of Niger. The Islamic State-linked terrorist group Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) has claimed responsibility for the attack. Reports also indicate that 22 attackers were killed during the counter-attack.
According to a BBC report, security forces killed several terrorists during the retaliatory action, while some attackers managed to escape by hiding among the local population. As news spread that the army had launched an operation to hunt down the terrorists, many civilians took to the streets armed with sticks and other weapons, attacking suspected strangers. The army later brought the situation under control.
Reports of 22 terrorists killed in counter-attack
According to an AP report, the attack took place on Thursday morning, immediately after the Fajr (dawn) prayers. Local residents reported hearing loud explosions following the prayers, shortly after which army units were seen heading toward the scene.
The Nigerien army stated that 22 terrorists were killed and four security personnel were injured in the counter-attack. Additionally, 20 suspects have been arrested. Security forces recovered a large quantity of weapons and ammunition from the terrorists, including RPG-7 launchers, AK-47 rifles, explosives, grenades, and communication equipment.
The army acknowledged that some civilians had joined the search for the terrorists, despite attempts to stop them from doing so. Officials state that the situation is now fully under control. The airport has been temporarily closed for investigation following the attack.
It is worth noting that Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali are all under military rule and have long been conducting operations against Islamic terrorist organizations. This airport in Niger serves as a crucial hub for both civil aviation and military operations, making it a target for terrorists.
An attempt had previously been made to target this same airport in January. Four soldiers were killed in that attack, while 20 attackers were eliminated. At the time, Niger’s President Abdourahamane Tchiani blamed France and Benin for the attack and expressed gratitude to Russia for its assistance in thwarting it.
