’24 Hours Without Food, Water’: Indian Woman In US For 35 Years Detained By ICE

For years, a woman guided migrants through the legal process; today, she herself stands on the brink of deportation due to those very same legal complexities.

अमेरिका में 35 साल से रह रही भारतीय महिला को डिपोर्ट करने की तैयारी, बेटा अमेरिकी सेना में होने के बावजूद ICE ने किया गिरफ्तार

Meenu Batra, a 53-year-old woman of Indian origin who has been residing in the United States for the past 35 years, has been taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Meenu Batra is a renowned court interpreter in Texas and has worked with the U.S. Immigration Court for decades. Ironically, the very woman who spent years guiding immigrants through the legal process now finds herself standing on the brink of deportation due to those same legal complexities.

Allegations of Detention and Inhumane Treatment at the Airport

Meenu Batra was taken into custody on March 17 at the Valley International Airport in Texas while she was traveling to Wisconsin for a court assignment. According to a habeas corpus petition filed by her lawyers:

  • She was held for approximately 24 hours without food or water.
  • She underwent surgery in December 2025 but is currently not receiving adequate medical care while in custody.
  • Her lawyers claim that she is suffering from a severe respiratory illness and has also lost her voice.

What is the ‘Withholding of Removal’ Case?

Meenu Batra moved to the United States following the anti-Sikh riots that took place in India during the 1980s. In the year 2000, she was granted the status of ‘Withholding of Removal.’

Legal Status: This designation meant that the U.S. government could not send her back to India because her life would be in danger there. However, this status did not grant her:

A Green Card or permanent citizenship.

Trump Administration Policy: Under the strict policies of the Donald Trump administration, action is now being taken even on old orders that had been pending for decades. Technically, she could be deported to a third country rather than to India. Family and Profession: The Hallmark of a Respected Citizen

Meenu Batra is a single mother of four children, all of whom are U.S. citizens. Her youngest son recently joined the U.S. Army and has filed a parole application seeking his mother’s release.

She is the only certified Master-level interpreter for Punjabi, Hindi, and Urdu in Texas. Her arrest has sparked outrage within the local community and among human rights activists.

Court Seeks Response from the Government

Meenu Batra’s attorneys assert that her detention is entirely unlawful, as she holds a valid work permit that remains valid for the next four years. Taking this matter seriously, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas has directed the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to file a response by April 21, 2026.

Currently, Meenu Batra is being held at the ‘El Valle Detention Center’ near the Mexican border. Her legal team is demanding her immediate release so that she may receive necessary medical assistance.
