In Uttar Pradesh, a Sub-Inspector allegedly committed the very act that the UP Police—the world’s largest police force—exists to prevent: theft. A truck driver in Hamirpur district has accused Sub-Inspector Girish Mishra of stealing ₹20,000.

Initially, out of respect for the uniform, the truck driver gave the accused Sub-Inspector a lift from Kanpur to Hamirpur. Later, allegedly bringing disrepute to that very uniform, the Sub-Inspector stole the truck driver’s money. In a video, ₹500 notes were seen falling onto the ground from the Sub-Inspector’s uniform.

According to a report by Nahid Ansari (Aaj Tak), the accused Sub-Inspector, Girish Mishra—who is posted in Hamirpur district—was handed over to the police following the truck driver’s complaint. On Monday, July 6, the Hamirpur police announced that Sub-Inspector Girish Mishra had been immediately suspended and a departmental inquiry ordered.

Sub-Inspector Girish Mishra needed to travel from Kanpur to Hamirpur. The victim, truck driver Mahesh, stated that before reaching Ghatampur, the uniformed Sub-Inspector signaled for a ride, and Mahesh let him into the truck. Mahesh alleged that en route, the Sub-Inspector stole ₹20,000 kept in the truck and hid the cash inside his uniform before attempting to leave the vehicle. The driver further recounted:

“When we stopped the vehicle, he [the Sub-Inspector] jumped out and tried to flee. I shouted loudly, asking where he was taking my money. An Omni van was approaching; he signaled it to stop, got in, and fled. I chased him. He got out after crossing the Yamuna River and was walking back when I caught him there…”

Mahesh claimed that the Sub-Inspector had stolen his ₹20,000. Videos related to the incident are also going viral on social media; the truck driver is seen demanding his money back from the accused Sub-Inspector and beating him publicly. People gathered nearby and began recording videos. Currency notes started falling onto the ground. The police were informed of the incident and took the accused Sub-Inspector away in a vehicle.

“A video is circulating on social media (dated July 6, 2026) in which an individual accuses a Sub-Inspector of stealing money. Based on the formal complaint received from the concerned individual regarding this matter, proceedings are underway to register a case under relevant sections at the Kotwali Nagar police station in Hamirpur.”

CO Yashpal Singh further stated that the accused Sub-Inspector, Girish Mishra, has been suspended with immediate effect, and orders for disciplinary action against him have been issued.
