Another incident of targeted killing has come to light in Punjab. On Saturday, RTI activist and lawyer Simranjit Singh was shot dead on the Jalandhar-Ludhiana Highway. Unidentified assailants ambushed and opened fire on him near Chaheru, close to LPU on the Jalandhar-Ludhiana Highway. According to preliminary investigations, the attack was specifically targeted at Simranjit. The attackers had already laid an ambush and were lying in wait for him. As soon as Simranjit arrived at the spot, the assailants, who were already present, began raining bullets upon him.
The exact motive behind Simranjit Singh’s murder has not yet come to light. Upon receiving information about the incident, a police team immediately rushed to the scene and initiated an investigation into the matter. The police have launched an effort to identify the killers and secure their arrest. Several weapons have been recovered by the police from the crime scene.
Naveen Singla, DIG of the Jalandhar Range, stated that the Kapurthala Control Room had received a report regarding a body lying at the scene, following which a police team immediately reached the spot. During the preliminary investigation, the police recovered a .32 bore pistol and a 12 bore rifle from the site. CCTV footage from the surrounding area is also being scrutinized to uncover details of the case and gather clues.
The police have registered a case regarding Simranjit Singh’s murder and have commenced an investigation. Furthermore, the police have stated that they are examining every possible angle to ascertain the motive behind the killing. It will only become clear as the investigation progresses whether this incident stemmed from a personal feud or if there is a larger conspiracy behind it.
