Kyiv hit by deadly Russian strikes, several dead and dozens wounded

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s fears came true when Russia once again launched a major attack on Kyiv. The entire capital was shaken by missiles and drones, and six people lost their lives. Residents took shelter, but numerous buildings sustained significant damage, and power outages were reported in several areas.

Kyiv: Amidst the situation arising from the conflict in Iran, global attention has shifted away from the war that has been ongoing for the past three and a half years. We are referring to the Russia-Ukraine war. Late last night, Russian missiles and drones descended upon Kyiv—the Ukrainian capital—wreaking havoc. Russia launched a large-scale aerial assault on the Ukrainian capital. Several powerful explosions rocked the city of Kyiv, and massive plumes of smoke were seen rising into the sky.

For several hours, as air-raid sirens blared across Kyiv, Russian missiles bore down on the city. Residents were forced to flee to bunkers for shelter, spending yet another night under the looming shadow of Russian attacks. The assault resulted in the deaths of at least five people nationwide, while more than 55 others sustained injuries.

Ukrainian air defense systems attempted to intercept the incoming missiles; however, the sounds of multiple explosions reverberated throughout the city. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko issued a message to the public, confirming that explosions were occurring within the city. He urged residents to remain in shelters, assuring them that the air defense forces were actively engaged. Tymur Tkachenko, Head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, reported that the enemy was launching attacks using ballistic missiles.

He appealed to the public to remain in their shelters until the all-clear signal was given. The city of Dnipro suffered the most extensive damage, where missile and drone strikes left several residential buildings damaged. According to the local governor, five people were killed and 16 injured in the city. Photographs circulating on social media showed several buildings that had partially collapsed.

Widespread Destruction Caused by the Attacks

Russia also launched numerous drones and missiles at Kharkiv. The attacks inflicted damage upon multi-story residential buildings, vehicles, and government structures. According to the city’s mayor, Ihor Terekhov, at least 10 people were injured in the attacks. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that power outages occurred in several areas following the attacks. In the Solomianskyi district, 15- and 24-story residential buildings sustained damage, while in the Obolonskyi district, drone debris fell near a kindergarten, setting the building on fire. Furthermore, several gas stations, commercial buildings, and medical clinics were also damaged.
