The death toll from floods in Assam has reached 68. A total of 5.24 lakh people, 763 villages, and 9 districts remain affected, while relief, rehabilitation, and power restoration work is underway.

The flood crisis in Assam has not yet fully abated. While the situation has begun to improve in several areas as floodwaters recede, 5.24 lakh people across 763 villages in nine districts remain affected. Meanwhile, the death toll has risen to 68 following the deaths of two more individuals in Charaideo district. Additionally, 48,742 hectares of agricultural land remain submerged, and many families are struggling to return to normalcy.
Waters Recede in Many Areas, but the Crisis Persists
Although floodwaters have started to recede in several regions, relief and rehabilitation efforts continue unabated. According to the latest reports, the Dhansiri (South) River at Numaligarh is the only river currently flowing above the danger mark. While the number of flood-affected districts has dropped to nine, hundreds of thousands of people continue to grapple with the aftermath of the disaster.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that state government ministers would visit various areas to coordinate rehabilitation efforts. He noted that the immediate priority is to deliver relief to the worst-hit districts, such as Sivasagar, Jorhat, and Golaghat. The state government is also working to restore electricity in areas where power had been cut off for safety reasons during the floods.
Focus on Power Restoration and Relief Operations
According to the Chief Minister, teams from the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) are conducting safety inspections prior to restoring power. Subsequently, electricity supply is being resumed in a phased manner across affected areas, including Sivasagar, Jorhat, Charaideo, Dhubri, and Bongaigaon. The government aims to normalize essential services as quickly as possible and assist affected individuals in safely returning to their normal lives.
Relief, rescue, and rehabilitation operations are ongoing across the state. As floodwaters recede, images and videos of the devastation are surfacing on social media, clearly depicting the plight of the affected villages and the hardships faced by the people. Papon Appeals for Help
Amid the havoc caused by the floods, renowned Assamese singer Papon has appealed to people across the country and abroad to come forward and assist the flood victims. In a video message, he stated that many villages are submerged, a large number of people have been rendered homeless, and both humans and animals have lost their lives in the floods. He urged people to extend a helping hand to Assam.
