Iran claims attack on American air base after U.S. military strikes, further clouding peace deal prospects

Following the US attack, Iran has now gone on the offensive as well. On Thursday, the IRGC attacked a US airbase near the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC itself has confirmed this.

The temporary ceasefire brokered by Pakistan between the United States and Iran now appears to be on the verge of collapse. The reason cited for this is yet another major airstrike launched by the U.S. military against Iran. According to reports, late Wednesday night, the U.S. military carried out an attack targeting military bases located within Iran.

According to local media reports, the sounds of three consecutive, loud explosions were heard around 1:30 AM in the eastern sector of Bandar Abbas—a strategic city in southern Iran. However, there has been no official confirmation yet regarding the precise location of the blasts or the exact nature of the attack.

According to a Reuters report, a U.S. official stated that the American military undertook this action in self-defense. According to the official, the military base targeted in the attack was deemed to pose a potential threat to U.S. forces and international commercial vessels operating in the Strait of Hormuz.

The report further claims that during the attack, U.S. forces successfully shot down several lethal drones launched by Iran while they were still airborne.

Iranian media outlets have also confirmed the attacks. According to ‘Fars’—an Iranian semi-official news agency—Iran’s air defense systems were activated immediately following the explosions, and defensive fire was directed into the sky for several minutes. As of now, Iranian officials have not released any official details regarding the extent of the damage, stating only that an investigation into the incident is currently underway.

It is noteworthy that this marks the second major attack launched by the U.S. against Iran within the last 48 hours. Earlier, on Monday, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) had targeted missile launch sites in southern Iran, as well as Iranian naval vessels accused of laying naval mines at sea. CENTCOM spokesperson Captain Tim Hawkins described that operation as a necessary measure to ensure the safety and security of U.S. troops.

In the wake of these attacks, Iran has accused the United States of violating the ceasefire and has issued a warning that it will respond with a strong reaction. The Iranian government has unequivocally stated that any act of aggression will be met with a response. Meanwhile, back-channel talks—mediated by Oman and Qatar—are underway to de-escalate tensions between the two nations and prevent a full-blown war. However, US President Donald Trump has maintained a hardline stance regarding any potential agreement with Iran.

During a cabinet meeting, Trump stated, “I am not satisfied with the current proposal. If a deal is to be reached, it will be on our terms; otherwise, we will have to resolve this matter once and for all through military action.”

Trump also dismissed claims made by Iran suggesting that, under any future agreement, Iran and Oman would jointly control the shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz. He made it clear that this international maritime route would remain open for global trade under any circumstances.
