Petrol and diesel prices in the country have risen once again. With the implementation of new rates across the four major metropolitan cities—including Delhi—concerns regarding rising inflation have intensified.
Petrol and diesel prices have once again been hiked across the country. This marks the fourth time in the last 10 days that fuel prices have been raised. Under the new rates, the price of petrol has increased by ₹2.61 per liter, and that of diesel by ₹2.71 per liter. In the national capital, Delhi, petrol prices have now reached ₹102.12 per liter, while diesel stands at ₹95.20 per liter. The new prices came into effect at 6:00 AM on May 25.
Petrol and Diesel Prices Rise Across All Four Metros
Following the new rates, fuel has become more expensive across the country’s major metropolitan cities. In Delhi, petrol is now priced at ₹102.12 per liter and diesel at ₹95.20 per liter. In Kolkata, petrol has reached ₹113.51 per liter and diesel ₹99.82 per liter. In Mumbai, petrol is selling at ₹111.21 per liter and diesel at ₹97.83 per liter, while in Chennai, the price of petrol has risen to ₹107.77 per liter and diesel to ₹99.55 per liter. These continuously rising prices have heightened concerns among the general public.
Fourth Hike in 10 Days Sparks Growing Concern
Apprehensions are mounting that the continuous rise in fuel prices will now impact transportation, logistics, and the cost of everyday necessities. On May 16, petrol and diesel prices had already been hiked by ₹3 per liter. Prior to this, fuel prices had remained relatively stable since April 2022. However, in March 2024—ahead of the Lok Sabha elections—petrol and diesel prices had been reduced by ₹2 per liter.
Apprehensions of Rising Inflation and Transport Costs
Experts warn that the persistent rise in petrol and diesel prices could lead to increased transportation and logistics costs. This is also likely to have a ripple effect on the prices of food items and essential commodities. A direct economic impact of this trend could be felt by commuters, transport operators, and those involved in business and trade. Government Explains the Reason for the Hike
Government officials state that import costs have risen due to fluctuations in the global energy market and continuously escalating geopolitical tensions. Consequently, adjusting prices became necessary to maintain a stable fuel supply and manage rising expenditures.
