Chaos erupted at a Gurdwara located in the Duisburg district of Moers, Germany, when a sudden violent clash broke out between two factions. At least 11 people were injured in this incident. According to eyewitnesses, the altercation escalated to such an extent that weapons—including knives, kirpans, pepper spray, and pistols—were used.
Violence Erupts Ahead of Religious Ceremony
It is reported that approximately 40 people were involved in the altercation. The dispute between the two sides intensified just moments before a religious ceremony was scheduled to begin at the Gurdwara; almost instantly, a scuffle spiraled into a violent clash.
Videos surfacing on social media show individuals attacking one another, providing a stark indication of the severity of the incident.
Use of Weapons Escalates the Situation
According to eyewitnesses, some individuals deployed pepper spray, following which one person reportedly fired a pistol. Meanwhile, several others were seen brandishing sharp-edged weapons, such as knives and kirpans.
However, the police have not recovered any actual firearm from the scene. Preliminary investigations suggest that the weapon in question may have been a blank-firing pistol—a device that does not discharge live ammunition but produces a loud bang.
Committee Elections and Funding Disputes Cited as Cause
The police’s initial investigation has revealed that the dispute stemmed from issues regarding the Gurdwara committee elections and its funds. Tensions had been simmering for a long time between the old and new management factions, with both groups locked in a standoff over control and decision-making authority. One eyewitness claimed that the attack appeared to have been premeditated.
Police Action and Investigation Underway
Upon receiving reports of the incident, a heavy police contingent rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control. A special tactical unit was also deployed. All injured individuals received medical treatment at the scene.
The police have detained one suspect and are currently working to determine who initiated the violence and who attacked whom.
