India | Jammu and Kashmir: At Least 15 dead after a bus met with an accident in the village Kanote, Udhampur.

In Jammu, a passenger bus traveling from the town of Ramnagar to Udhampur went out of control and plunged down a hillside. It is reported that the driver suddenly lost control; 15 people have died in the accident.

A passenger bus met with an accident in the Ramnagar-Kaghote area of ​​Udhampur district in Jammu and Kashmir. In this tragedy, 16 people lost their lives, while 20 others sustained injuries. Following the accident, an administrative team arrived at the scene and immediately commenced relief and rescue operations. According to reports, the accident occurred while the bus was traveling from Ramnagar towards Udhampur.

Accident Occurs at a Dangerous Bend

Officials stated that the bus crashed around 10:00 AM at a treacherous bend on a hilly road in the Ramnagar area. Local residents were the first to reach the accident site; they initiated rescue efforts and pulled the injured out from the wreckage. Shortly thereafter, the police and other emergency response teams arrived at the scene and intensified the operation to safely evacuate the victims and clear the site.

Many of the Injured in Critical Condition

Officials reported that a total of 15 bodies were recovered from the wreckage of the vehicle, while 20 injured individuals have been transported to the hospital; the condition of several of these injured persons is reported to be “critical.” Officials noted that the accident took place while the bus was traveling from a remote village toward Udhampur.

Modi Expresses Grief Over Accident, Announces Compensation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his deep anguish over this accident. He has announced compensation for the kin of the deceased and for those injured in the incident. PM Modi stated, “I am deeply saddened to learn of the loss of life and property caused by the bus accident in Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir. I extend my heartfelt condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in this tragedy. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.” An ex-gratia amount of ₹2 lakh from the PMNRF (Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund) will be provided to the next of kin of each person who lost their life in this tragic accident. The injured will receive ₹50,000 each.

Immediately following the accident, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh shared information regarding the incident in a post on the social media platform ‘X’. He wrote, “Just spoke with the DC (Deputy Commissioner) of Udhampur, Minga Sherpa.” “I have learned that less than an hour ago, a tragic road accident occurred in Kanot village. This accident involved a public transport bus traveling from Ramnagar to Udhampur.”

He further wrote, “Rescue operations have been initiated immediately. It is feared that there are significant casualties in this incident. Every possible assistance is being provided. The injured are being sent to hospitals for treatment. Arrangements are being made to airlift those who are critically injured. I am in constant touch with the local administration, as well as with our team of local workers led by Rajinder Sharma.”

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha Expresses Grief Over the Accident

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has also expressed his sorrow regarding this accident. He wrote on X: “The tragic road accident that occurred in Udhampur is heart-wrenching. My deepest condolences go out to the bereaved families. May God grant them strength. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. I have directed the District Administration, Police, SDRF, and the Health Department to provide every possible assistance to those affected.”
