The Election Commission has made public detailed data regarding over 6 million pending cases related to the Special Summary Revision (SSR) of the electoral rolls in West Bengal. Throughout this entire process, the names of a total of 9.066 million voters have been removed so far. Significantly, for the first time, the Commission has also shared district-wise data on additions and deletions, a move expected to enhance transparency.

Process Completed in Three Phases

The task of purifying the electoral rolls in Bengal was completed in three major phases:

  • During the preparation of the preliminary draft in December 2025, 5.82 million names were removed.
  • By the time the final list was published in February 2026, another 546,000 names were removed.
  • Subsequently, following judicial intervention and detailed scrutiny, a decision was taken to remove over 2.7 million additional names.
  • Following these three phases, the total number of removed names has crossed the 9 million mark.

Scrutiny of 6 Million Cases; 3.2 Million Names Reinstated

According to the Commission, over 6 million cases were placed under scrutiny on the grounds of “logical discrepancies”—that is, technical errors within the data. These cases were categorized as “under adjudication” to allow judicial officers to review them.

So far, 5.984 million cases have been disposed of. Following the scrutiny:

  • The names of 3.268 million eligible voters were reinstated;
  • While 2.716 million names were removed after being found ineligible.

The review of the remaining cases is currently ongoing.

District-wise Data Made Public for the First Time

In the history of the Election Commission, this marks the first instance where district-wise data regarding additions and deletions related to the West Bengal SSR has been made public. The Commission states that the objective of this step is to instill transparency in the entire process and to bolster the credibility of the electoral rolls.

Disposing of such a massive number of cases administratively posed a significant challenge, which was successfully accomplished with the assistance of judicial officers. This entire data is now publicly available, which is expected to further strengthen confidence in the electoral process.
