A powerful earthquake struck the North Molucca Sea in Indonesia on March 2. The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.4. As a result of the earthquake, small tsunami waves were generated in northern Indonesia.
इंडोनेशिया में फिर भूकंप के तेज़ झटके, 7.4 रही तीव्रता, तटीय क्षेत्रों में सुनामी की चेतावनी
A powerful earthquake has struck Indonesia. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 occurred early Thursday morning in the ocean off the coast of eastern Indonesia. There are reports of one fatality resulting from the quake. Following this, a U.S. monitoring agency issued a warning regarding the possibility of a tsunami within a 1,000-kilometer radius of the earthquake’s epicenter.
According to the USGS, the earthquake’s epicenter was located at 1.20 degrees North latitude and 126.35 degrees East longitude. A report by the China Earthquake Networks Center indicated that the quake struck at a depth of approximately 30 kilometers.
The USGS further noted that the earthquake—which was initially measured at a magnitude of 7.8—occurred in the Molucca Sea at approximately 6:48 a.m. local time.
The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an alert stating that dangerous tsunami waves could be generated within a 1,000-kilometer radius of the epicenter, particularly in the coastal regions of Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia. The USGS also issued a warning regarding the potential for dangerous tsunami waves in areas situated within the same distance from the epicenter.
Indonesia is one of the most seismically active regions in the world, as it is situated along the “Pacific Ring of Fire.” This vast, 40,000-kilometer-long arc of volcanoes and fault lines is formed by the interaction and movement of tectonic plates.
This horseshoe-shaped belt, which encircles the Pacific Ocean, accounts for approximately 90 percent of the world’s earthquakes and is renowned for its frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
According to the USGS, just last month—on March 3—a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck in the ocean off the coast of Sumatra. While the event rattled local residents, it did not result in any major damage. The earthquake originated in the sea near the northeastern tip of Sumatra, causing many people in the region—where tremors occur frequently—to panic and flee their homes.
Meanwhile, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency recorded the earthquake’s magnitude at 6.4 and reported that it struck at a depth of 13 kilometers.
