हरीश राणा का दिल्ली के एम्स में निधन, भारत में इच्छामृत्यु की अनुमति पाने वाले पहले व्यक्ति
Ghaziabad: Harish Rana of Ghaziabad, who had been in a coma for the past 13 years, has passed away at AIIMS. After receiving permission for euthanasia from the Supreme Court, Harish Rana was shifted to AIIMS, Delhi, last Sunday, where the process of his euthanasia was carried out under the supervision of doctors.
Approximately 13 years ago, Harish fell from the fourth floor of his PG accommodation in Chandigarh, and he had remained in a coma ever since. After hopes for his recovery faded, his family petitioned the Supreme Court for euthanasia on Harish’s behalf; he has finally found liberation from 13 years of suffering.
The family has not yet released any information regarding whether Harish Rana’s last rites will be performed in Delhi or in Ghaziabad. Harish’s family originally hails from Himachal Pradesh, but his father later moved the family to Delhi. To fund Harish’s medical treatment, his father was compelled to sell their home in Delhi, and the entire family subsequently moved into a small flat in Ghaziabad.
Harish: The First Person to Receive Euthanasia
Harish Rana was the first individual in India to be granted euthanasia. At the time of this tragic accident, Harish was pursuing an engineering degree at Punjab University. He was speaking to his sister on the phone at his PG accommodation in Chandigarh when he suddenly fell from the fourth floor. The accident resulted in severe head and spinal injuries, plunging him into a coma. The family spared no effort in seeking treatment for him, but Harish never regained his ability to stand on his own.
Harish Departs—Forgiving All and Seeking Forgiveness from All
The Supreme Court granted permission for euthanasia while hearing the petition filed by his father. In its verdict, the Court directed AIIMS, Delhi, to withdraw Harish’s life support in a systematic manner to ensure a dignified death. Before he was shifted to AIIMS, Komal, a member of the Brahma Kumaris, applied a tilak (sacred mark) on his forehead and bade him rest in peace—forgiving everyone and seeking forgiveness from all.
