At least 47 people were injured in a missile attack launched by Iran against the southern Israeli city of Dimona on Saturday. This city is considered strategically vital due to its dome-shaped nuclear facility. Additionally, it is home to a large population of Indian origin, earning it the nickname “Little India.”
According to emergency services and local residents, the injured include a 12-year-old child who sustained critical injuries from shrapnel. Furthermore, a woman in her late 20s or early 30s was injured by flying glass shards, while 31 others sustained minor injuries.
14 People Hospitalized
Following the attack, 14 people were hospitalized suffering from shock and anxiety. Several individuals sustained injuries after falling while rushing toward bomb shelters, thereby increasing the total number of casualties. According to local residents, the missile struck a community center, causing damage to several older homes in the vicinity. However, a major disaster was averted as most residents managed to reach safe shelters in time. Tragically, one child was left outside and sustained severe injuries.
Why Was the Missile Not Intercepted? Army Launches Investigation
The Israeli military has announced that it is investigating why the Iranian ballistic missile could not be intercepted while in flight. According to the military, the air defense system attempted to intercept the missile but was unsuccessful in shooting it down. The international nuclear watchdog has appealed to both sides to exercise maximum military restraint following the attack. According to the agency, while reports of a missile strike in Dimona have been received, there are no indications that the nuclear research facility located there sustained any damage.
Meanwhile, Iran has stated that it targeted Dimona in retaliation for a previous attack on its own nuclear facility. However, the Israeli military has denied that any attack was carried out against an Iranian nuclear facility on that same day. Home to a Large Population of Indian Origin
Notably, the city of Dimona is home to approximately 7,500 people of Indian origin—a population consisting primarily of families with roots in Maharashtra. People of Indian origin constitute roughly 30 percent of the city’s total population, a demographic makeup that reflects deep cultural ties with India. The Marathi language can frequently be heard on the streets of Dimona, and numerous shops across the city offer popular Indian delicacies such as Sonpapdi, Gulab Jamun, Papdi Chaat, and Bhel Puri. Cricket is also immensely popular among the local youth, a shared passion that further strengthens the bond between this city and India.
