On Saturday morning, the city of Mathura in Uttar Pradesh witnessed an uproar following the murder of Chandrashekhar—a cow vigilante associated with the cow protection movement—in the district. He was allegedly killed by suspected cow smugglers who ran him over with a vehicle. Subsequently, enraged cow vigilantes pelted stones at the police administration. The police have arrested one accused individual and have launched a search for the others involved.

According to reports, Chandrashekhar—a cow vigilante in the Braj region of Mathura known locally as “Farsa Wale Baba” (The Baba with the Axe)—was crushed to death by suspected cow smugglers using a vehicle. The incident occurred near Navipur village, under the Kotwan police outpost within the jurisdiction of the Kosikalan police station.

Following the incident, locals and cow vigilantes gathered on the Chhata National Highway on Saturday morning and began demanding the immediate arrest of the accused, resulting in a traffic jam stretching for several kilometers along the highway. Upon receiving information about the blockade, police and administrative officials rushed to the scene and attempted to pacify the crowd.

However, the situation quickly escalated; the crowd became enraged and began pelting stones at the police, prompting the police to resort to a lathi-charge (baton charge) to disperse the mob. Several people sustained injuries during the clash and were admitted to a nearby hospital, where they received first aid before being discharged.

The cow vigilantes have demanded that the police arrest the accused individuals as soon as possible, warning that failure to do so will lead to further protests in other locations in the near future.

Police officials stated that as soon as they received reports of the highway blockade, forces from multiple police stations were deployed to the scene to attempt to calm the crowd; however, the situation rapidly spiraled out of control, leading to the stone-pelting. The entire incident has been video-recorded.

They further informed that, acting with promptness, the police apprehended one young man involved in the incident right at the scene, while three other accused individuals managed to flee under the cover of darkness.

Police officials confirmed that the arrested accused is currently being interrogated, and multiple teams have been constituted to search for the absconding suspects. Additionally, roadblocks (nakabandis) have been set up in surrounding areas to ensure the swift arrest of the accused individuals.

They added that the search for the remaining accused is being conducted based on the statement provided by the arrested individual, and they are expected to be apprehended very soon. Anyone involved in this will not be spared.
