According to officials, 10 patients died in this incident. Some of these patients died of suffocation in the Intensive Care Unit, while others died while being shifted to other wards.

A massive fire broke out late at night in the Trauma Care Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the SCB Medical College and Hospital, located in Cuttack, Odisha. The incident occurred around 3:00 AM on Monday, when a fire suddenly erupted in the Trauma Care Emergency Department situated on the first floor of the hospital.
As soon as the fire started, panic and chaos ensued among the patients admitted to the hospital and their relatives. According to officials, 10 patients lost their lives in this tragedy. Some of these patients died due to asphyxiation within the ICU, while others passed away while being evacuated to other wards. The condition of five patients remains extremely critical. Several hospital staff members also sustained injuries, although the exact number has not yet been officially confirmed.
Rescued Patients Shifted to Other Locations
Immediately after the fire broke out, hospital staff and the fire brigade launched rescue operations. The hospital’s own fire department was the first to take action, and three additional fire tenders from external agencies quickly arrived at the scene.
Rapid efforts were made to bring the fire under control; however, the fire and smoke caused severe distress to many patients. Critically ill patients admitted to the ICU were immediately evacuated, and those in a more fragile condition were transferred to the hospital’s new Medicine ICU.
CM Expresses Grief
Upon receiving news of the incident, the Health Secretary, the District Collector of Cuttack, and the Deputy Commissioner of Police rushed to the scene. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi also arrived at the hospital. He visited the new Medicine Block to meet with the victims and assess the situation.
The Chief Minister’s Office stated that the Chief Minister has expressed deep anguish over this tragic incident. He inspected the site of the fire and ordered a judicial inquiry into the entire matter. Furthermore, he directed officials to immediately shift affected patients to safe locations and ensure that their medical treatment continues without any interruption.
Expressing his condolences to the bereaved families, the Chief Minister announced that an ex-gratia payment of ₹25 lakh would be provided to the family of each deceased victim from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
